Another Domain, Another Opportunity
As a domain developer, I have tried to concentrate my efforts on building my sites with the aim of selling services that I can complete myself, or act as a sales agent, facilitating a sale rather than just providing a sales lead. There’s a huge difference, which is why I command much higher commissions than most domainers or affiliates will be able to achieve.
But, in addition to providing potential sales channels, by the nature of what I do, my developed domains also present me with additional business opportunities that I may never have thought of.
Yesterday for example, I received a call from a professor of psychology at one of the UK’s leading universities.
He’d visited one of my early web sites, recruitment-advertising.co.uk in search of somebody who knew recruitment well and understood the fact that a recruitment advertisement should also act as the initial screening mechanism too, especially in a recession.
He has a developed system that screens candidates online, using a mixture of psychometrics and other technologies, that has been used by the commercial side of his university for a number of years.
More interestingly, he has a portfolio of established clients that reads like a who’s who of international commerce, including China and Japan.
We spoke on the phone for about an hour and discovered many symmetries to our approach. Essentially, being an academic, he is seeking assistance from somebody with more commercial experience, particularly in respect of attracting relevant candidates, something that my many years recruitment experience provides.
It’s early days, but as usual, I find myself exploring an opportunity that presented itself via one of my domains, that could be extremely lucrative.
To me, this is the excitement of domaining, not knowing from one day to the next, what opportunities will crop up and who you might meet.
It’s more exciting than selling a domain name (at least for the figures I can achieve with my names) and it’s a whole lot more interesting than parking.
Where will domaining take you today?
