HR v Recruiters - Seconds Away, Round One!

An uneasy relationship often exists between HR departments and third party recruiters.

Each is essential to the other in many ways, yet for many years recruiters and HR departments have treated each other with suspision.

The fault usually lies with professional recruitment industry trainers actually recommend that recruiters avoid speaking to HR & Personnel departments.

Their hype and hustle approach demands that recruiters ignore protocol and aim directly for the line manager with the vacancy.

This in turn causes resentment and often creates considerable inconvenience to the employer.

If an HR department is responsible for recruitment issues, they need to be in complete control of the process and the recruiter needs to understand this.

However, if you have read the other articles on this site, you will already know that most recruiters are merely commission-hungry sales people.

To them, an HR manager or assistant is not a decision maker - and therefore, there is no point in working with them.

As a very prominent recruitment industry trainers is fond of saying, "Never accept a "no" from a person who cannot give you a "yes" decision.

Is this short-sighted?

I think so. Some of my best relationships stem from introductions made from HR departments.

It's not difficult for an HR person to identify the better recruiters - and maybe that's what some of the sales oriented recruiters are afraid of.

Recruitment can only succeed if HR and the recruiters can work together and understand each others needs - and then ensure that each is met.

Working with a third party IT recruiter needn't be painful if it's done properly - in fact it could dramatically increase your production efficiency.
