Lessons From The Past - For Your Future
"All the good domain names are gone".
"There are no new opportunities online".
"The goldrush is over".
"It's ok for you, because you got in early"
I hear all of the above comments just about every day when I'm discussing domains, Internet ideas, marketing and the other boring stuff that I'm into.
The fact is that there is opportunity all around for anyone who is prepared to open their eyes a bit.
My Internet career to date has taken me down the development path. This means that I buy domain names and try to develop them into mini-businesses, either for myself, or in partnership with someone else who needs some marketing help.
There are easier ways.
I don't often quote other people's blogs, but Rick Schwartz this week posted an interesting article from his personal board archives. I am privileged to be a member of Rick's board and had I read this in 2000, when he first wrote it, I might have taken a different path.
I still might.
Read this and a world of opportunity could well open up in front of you.

I've devoted a lot of time on my own blog to writing about opportunity, or more precisely to our attitudes about opportunity. The problem for many is not the lack of opportunities, but the inability to see them, the fear to act on them, and the self-prophesying negativity that guarantees giving up too soon and failing. Ok, so it's no longer possible to buy a one-word generic dot com for anything less than the price of a Lamborghini. So what? New opportunities are opening up every moment. Personally I'm registering a lot of .in domains right now because I believe that 5 years from now these will be worth their weight in gold. A few folks have criticized me for this. We'll see. One last thought: I'm reminded of the saying that the man who says something can't be done is often interrupted by the sound of someone else doing it.
