Domainers

You'll see the word "domainer" a lot on this blog as time goes on, so here's a very simple note on what a domainer is and isn't. This is posted for the benefit of those who don't know, not those who do!

First of all, in the column on the right of this entry, you'll see "My Friends Blogs" - all of these people are domainers. I call them my friends because I have either met them, or have been in touch with them in my short domaining career. they are the best in the business and you're strongly advised to read their blogs. It's an education.

A domainer then, is simply a person (or company) who invests in Internet domain names. That could be anything from buying just one or two good quality domains to an entire portfolio containing hundreds or thousands of names.

There are several ways in which a domainer can make money and these vary from person to person. Everyone has their own favourite. Mine happens to be developing domain names into mini businesses.

Others prefer to park their names with Pay Per Click (PPC) companies and do no work other than to change their nameservers.

Others again will simply sit on their portfolio and do nothing with it, preferring perhaps to offer their names for sale to the highest bidder.

Either way, domain names offer a great return on investment in many cases.

So what isn't a domainer?

A domainer isn't a cybersquatter. A true domainer stays away from trade mark names, other people's company names and generally only buys high quality, generic names.

I just wanted to get that off my chest in preparation for further discussions later.
